Detroit Free Press: Critic tweaks Occupy Wall Street supporter Michael Moore for Torch Lake manse
Conservative critics of Michigan-bred filmmaker and Occupy Wall Street supporter Michael Moore are having a bit of sport today with an item posted on one of Andrew Breitbart’s websites, Big Hollywood, featuring photos and assessment records for Moore’s sprawling vacation home on Torch Lake.

The photos show a multistory stone, brick and wood-sided home, taken from lake side, and a satellite view that makes the place look like a millionaire’s compound. Which is exactly the point for Breitbart, who ridicules Moore for urging the protesters to “continue their fight against the wealthy 1% of Americans” when he is a one-percenter himself.

Breitbart describes Moore’s getaway as the “kind of luxurious summer home that 99% of Americans can only dream of owning.”

Actually, it’s more luxurious than Breitbart realizes. He tracked down the Forest Home property tax assessment listing the Moore mansion’s state equalized value at $925,000 and appears to take that figure to be its market value. In Michigan, however, SEV represents only 50% of estimated market value, so it’s really a $1.85-million property. At least, according to the assessor.
This is what liberal hypocrisy look like:
Shocker: Big bets on solar company aren't paying off for taxpayers. The key phase of the entire article:
She (Granholm) declined to speak to the Free Press for this report.
Freaking idiot! Plus:
Then-Gov. Jennifer Granholm got the company's United Solar Ovonic subsidiary to open in Greenville. She promised $37 million in incentives to create more than 500 jobs in a west Michigan town devastated when appliance maker Electrolux took its jobs to Mexico.

Government investments, commitments and congressional earmarks totaled more than $170 million for the company. The hope, if not the promise, was that ECD would create more than 1,000 new jobs in Michigan as green technology took hold.

But ECD and United Solar are dying. Stock worth nearly $80 a share three years ago was trading for less than 40 cents a share this week. A Battle Creek plant -- never opened -- is for sale. Hundreds of employees already have been laid off, and this week the company said it will let go 500 more and furlough 400 as it suspends its operations.
Solar Ovonics actually has a really good product, but it cots too much:

UPDATE: From the Free Press comments:
Well Golly Freep that is a big surprise. You could not shut Granholm up when it came to all this green crap and I kept telling all of you since the beginning these solar panels and wind mills were a flash in the pan.

We tried this during the Jimmy Carter days and it was a bust then too. Will you libs ever learn not to repeat the same costly mistakes?

Look at the billions of taxpayer money that has been wasted on this green crap. Look at the mercury poisoned CFL blubs we are now mandated to use.

Being Liberal and green is a disease and a costly one at that.

Can we drill baby drill now?

Sarah Palin: Fire Eric Holder
When the stories about Operation Fast and Furious first broke, it sounded too crazy even for this administration.

Why would any government official with an ounce of common sense think it’s a good idea to facilitate the smuggling of thousands of guns into the hands of violent Mexican drug cartels? That’s what Operation Fast and Furious did.

You might think Eric Holder’s Department of Justice was setting up a sting operation in which our federal agents would swoop down and arrest the bad guys the minute the guns traded hands. But that’s not what happened. Eric Holder’s DOJ had American gun dealers sell weapons to “straw purchasers” tied to drug cartels without actually following the movement of the guns as they were then sold to Mexican drug lords. They apparently thought this so-called “gun-walking” operation would help them chart the path of gun smuggling, but they didn’t have a plan to actually control the weapons’ movements as the guns were allowed to “walk” into Mexico. All Holder’s DOJ did was arm violent criminals. What manner of fools do we have working in this administration? What’s next? Supplying nuclear weapons components to the Iranians so we can track their activities?
Read the whole thing. At the heart of Fast and Furious was the willful attempt to subvert the 2nd amendment of the US Constitution, and Holder ought to be tried for treason because of that.
Cry me a river already: Dems blast Cain's ‘Princess Nancy’ comment
Democrats are trying to raise indignation over Herman Cain's nickname for House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) -- and possibly raise some money off of it.

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee on Thursday included in its weekly email to supporters a note calling Cain out for referring to the former House speaker as "Princess Nancy." They were invited to sign a petition denouncing Cain's comment.

"That’s outrageous. As the first and only woman Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi has spent decades standing up for women and fighting for the middle class," wrote DCCC Executive Director Robby Mook. "She earned the Speaker’s gavel."
Should have called her a drama queen instead.

Attorney General Eric Holder might not have tried to equate the ATF’s Operation Fast and Furious with the Bush-era Operation Wide Receiver, as he tells Senator John Cornyn in testimony yesterday on the deadly scandal that has resulted in hundreds of murders, including at least one Border Patrol agent.  His defenders in and out of Congress certainly have, however, seizing on the earlier limited operation as an argument that the Obama administration and Holder’s Department of Justice only followed precedent set by the previous administration.  In a deft examination, however, Cornyn gets Holder to admit that Wide Receiver had critical differences from Fast and Furious, differences that went far beyond scope (via PJ Tatler):

So basically the second sentence overrides the first.
Detroit Free Press: Stage set for GOP debate at Oakland University

Tuesday, November 8, 2011

AP: Ohio voters reject Republican-backed union limits. Unions are $30 million poorer though. But they'll make that up in no time fleecing taxpayers.

It's not all bad news: Tea party activist wins mayor’s race in Troy
A tea party activist was elected mayor of Troy on Tuesday night, topping a city councilwoman who backed a controversial tax approved in August for the city's library.

Janice Daniels defeated Robin Beltramini by just more than 600 votes, 52 percent to 48 percent, according to complete unofficial returns.

Daniels, a member of the anti-tax group Troy Citizens United, is in line to succeed retiring Mayor Louise Schilling.

Daniels, 58, touts "openness and full disclosure." The 11-year resident has said she's never run for office and said she considers it a strength.
Why does the media continue to label the tea party "anti-tax"? Truly anti-tax people are called anarchists. The Tea Party is for limited taxation that comes with a limited government. Tea partiers like myself have no problem with funding legitimate functions of government (protection). It's the illegitimate ones (cutting checks to other people) that we are against because it is nothing short of theft.

National Review: We’re Still Not Cutting
Just last week, Democrats and Republicans in the Senate passed three new spending bills to increase 2012 funding above 2011 funding levels. The bills will increase spending for the Department of Agriculture by $6.4 billion; for the Departments of Transportation and Housing and Urban Development by more than $2 billion; and for the Commerce, Justice, and State departments by more than $694 million.

This isn’t austerity. It’s gluttony.
Detroit Free Press: Editorial: Legislature should rein in bullies, not license them. "Even if they didn't mean to, Michigan Senate Republicans sent a frightening message to kids: It's OK to pick on someone if they don't share your religious values, or if your own sense of moral piety frowns on who they are or what they do." Ironically, the Free Press wants the language removed so that if a students says homosexuality is a sin because of this Bible verse, they will themselves be punished as bullies. This is speech code that turns the first amendment on its head by banning faith. Essentially they want to trade a few young bullies on the local level who will grow up and learn the error of their ways for hundreds of powerful state-level bullies that will neither grow up nor learn theirs. No thanks.

No one wanted detainees,’ the special-operations officer told me. (The Administration maintains that had bin Laden immediately surrendered he could have been taken alive.) Nine years, seven months, and twenty days after September 11th, an American was a trigger pull from ending bin Laden’s life. The first round, a 5.56-mm. bullet, struck bin Laden in the chest. As he fell backward, the SEAL fired a second round into his head, just above his left eye.”

She said he reached under her skirt for her genitals and pushed her head toward his crotch in July 1997.

ChicagoLand: City fines and fees double, triple for minor and major offenses
If your car is impounded for carrying drugs, driving drunk, soliciting a prostitute or carrying a firearm registered to someone other than the driver, the penalty will double — to $2,000. But, if the violations occur within 500 feet of a park or school, the fine will triple — to $3,000.

If your car is seized for drag racing on Chicago streets, there’s a new, $1,000 fine in addition to the towing and storage fee. For playing a radio too loud, the new fine will be anywhere from $500 to $750.

If the vehicle is snatched for driving with a suspended or revoked license or displaying altered temporary registration permits, the fine would double — to $1,000. Vehicles towed after being used in an unlawful attempt to flee or elude police officers would also double — to $2,000.

Tampering with parking meters or pay-and-display boxes — something motorists have done on occasion to vent their anger at the deal that privatized Chicago parking meters — would carry a fine ranging from $500 to $750.

The mayor isn’t just throwing the book at criminals.

He’s also raising nuisance fines. They include:

Allowing weeds to grow to a height that exceeds 10 inches — $600-to-$1,200-a-day, up from $500-to-$1,000.

†Illegal dumping or allowing trash to accumulate in a way that provides a food supply for rats — $300-to-$600, up from $250-to-$500.

Detroit News: Michigan schools reap ‘best practices’ windfall. Funny what can happen when you put a pile of money in front of people.
Boondoggle: 49 state retirees collect pensions that top $100K. How is that not fleecing the taxpayers? Government retirees getting paid more not to work than those paying them get to work? Someof these people need to be put in prison.
Detroit Free Press:Editorial: For now, gas tax hike should be an option to fund roads. Michigan has the 6th highest gas tax in the nation. How about repealing prevailing wage laws instead and make road work a lot cheaper? Just a thought...

Barry Ritholtz: What caused the financial crisis? The Big Lie goes viral.
A Big Lie is so colossal that no one would believe that someone could have the impudence to distort the truth so infamously. There are many examples: Claims that Earth is not warming, or that evolution is not the best thesis we have for how humans developed. Those opposed to stimulus spending have gone so far as to claim that the infrastructure of the United States is just fine, Grade A (not D, as the we discussed last month), and needs little repair.

Wall Street has its own version: Its Big Lie is that banks and investment houses are merely victims of the crash. You see, the entire boom and bust was caused by misguided government policies. It was not irresponsible lending or derivative or excess leverage or misguided compensation packages, but rather long-standing housing policies that were at fault.
The Earth isn't warming, natural systems creating order from disorder violate a basic premise underpinning all of science, and the government did cause the financial crisis via social engineering through the mortgage system. Nobody is calling banks victims, but they were certainly goaded into subprime mortgages by liberals in Fannie and Freddie that demanded people that couldn't afford a home get a home.
Daily Caller: Rediscovered 2004 Senate ad shows Obama pitching similar rhetorical themes. Shicker: "A rediscovered video from Barack Obama’s 2004 Senate race shows him road-testing his current rhetorical techniques, pitching far-left policies, and depicting business and the marketplace as negative forces."

Washington Examiner: White House should stop fighting Solyndra subpoena. Another lesson in hypocrisy courtesy of batboy: "But Waxman lost no sleep worrying about unduly imposing on executive prerogatives a decade ago when a Republican, George W. Bush, was in the White House and his vice president, Dick Cheney, convened an energy task force. Cheney caused an uproar on Capitol Hill and in the liberal mainstream media when he rejected the demand of congressional Democrats, led by Waxman who was then the ranking minority member of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, that hundreds of task force documents be made public."
Washington Post: Romney, seen as most electable, still struggles to break out of pack, poll shows. Seen as most electable by the media that wants him as a week candidate for Obama.

Shocker, no?
Washington Post: On electoral map, Obama still has routes to victory in 2012, despite low ratings. I reckon each one of those routes involves the media slavishly covering for the in over his head Obama.
The Hill: Personal behavior seen as critical to how they cast ballot, say voters
An overwhelming majority of likely voters think it’s important to consider a politician’s private foibles when assessing his or her suitability for office.

But they also contend that presidential campaigns have become dirtier over the past generation, perhaps indicating a reluctance to accept allegations against particular candidates at face value.

The Politico: Ex-Pelosi aide's turnabout work. "Even by the revolving-door standards of Washington, this one has heads spinning: The Democratic staffer who was Nancy Pelosi's messaging guru during the health care debate is now working for a group led by the law's most powerful opponents." Can we call this Benedict Arlenitis?
Jack Kelly: The big college scam. "t's bad enough; the president's loan initiative will make it that much worse  —  The biggest consumer ripoff in America today — and the next economic bubble to burst — is higher education.  —  Tuition and fees at colleges and universities rose 439 percent between 1982 and 2007." I'd agree in areas like women' studies and education. But not in physics, chemistry or applied sciences.
